John William Donnelley, a Shoemaker from Folkestone, Kent, was born around 1873. He attested into the Oxfordshire Light Infantry, aged 14, on 29 March 1887 and served in both India and Burma between 21 November 1887 and 6 March 1898, before returning Home. He subsequently served in South Africa during the Boer War from 22 December 1899 to 4 October 1902, and was advanced Sergeant Bugler. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 189 of 1905 whilst serving in India from 22 September 1903 to 29 March 1908, during which time he won the Regimental Rifle Aggregate Championship and the Bengal Presidency Rifle Association Silver Medal both in 1904. Discharged at Home on 10 April 1908, he died in Tenterden, Kent, on 26 May 1950, aged 77.
