Frederick George Hume was born at Tolleshunt D’Arcy, Essex on 1 December 1872 and enlisted with the Royal Navy as Boy Class II on 23 April 1889 with the number 148390. Reaching his majority in December 1890, he was posted to the cruiser Blanche.
Still serving with her three years later, Hume was one of just 93 men from the vessel to join the Naval Brigade at Witu on the expedition against Sultan Fumo Omari. Going ashore the next year on 23 April 1894, he went on to serve with numerous vessels being discharged as a Petty Officer Class I on 4 May 1911; sold together with copied service papers.
