George Irwin was born in Kingston, England, on 8 August 1885, and enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Toronto on 13 September 1918. Originally passed as medically fit to serve following examination in New York, he served with the Canadian Siberia Expeditionary Force from 5 December 1918. Posted to Base Headquarters, his service was marred by sickness brought on by eating Japanese candy. Sent back home to the 1st Depot Battalion, 1st Central Ontario Regiment, he was discharged in May 1919.
