Replacement silver clip and straight-bar suspension, very fine.

Thomas Caldwell served in Lieutenant-Colonel Henry D. Oyly’s Company. His unit sustained casualties of just over 600 killed or wounded – some of them as a result of the fighting for the vital cross roads at Quatre Bras on the 16 June, but many more on the 18th, when the unit famously repulsed the final charge of the French Grenadiers under Ney. On that famous day the unit found themselves on the reverse slope of the Mont St. Jean ridge, forming the centre-right of Wellington’s defensive line. Oyly had his trusty steed, Bos, shot from under him. The ear of his mount was removed and mounted in a silver display for posterity, having been sold at auction some years prior.
