Albert Hodgson was born at Heigham, Norfolk on 29 October 1857 and attested with the Royal Navy as Boy Class II on 7 July 1873. Reaching his majority with H.M.S. Resistance (Old Rammo as she was nicknamed) on 29 October 1875.
Reaching the rank of Petty Officer Class II ten years later with Cambridge, Hodgson joined Pheobe as Petty Officer Class I on 1 December 1892. With her he served on the Benin River expedition against Chief Nana Olomu Brohemie, when she was one of just four ships in the expedition.
Going ashore at Vivid I in November the next year Hodgson was issued with his medal there in November 1895. He was finally pensioned on 31 December that same year, bringing a close to a long career; sold together with copied research.
