Robert White served with the Royal Navy (M1159) during the First World War and finished the war in the rank of Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class. He was Mentioned in Despatches, as announced in the Fourth Supplement to the London Gazette 30807 of Friday, July 19, 1918, on Tuesday, July 23, 1918, page 8596: "E.R.A., 2nd Cl., Robert White, O.N. M1159 (Chatham)." For his First World War service, was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He later moved to Canada and settled in Peterborough, Ontario. During the Second World War, White was with the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve (A-1333) and was called up for service with the Royal Canadian Navy (X-61765), in the rank of Chief Engine Room Artificer. The announcement for his Distinguished Service Medal appeared in the London Gazette of January 1, 1941 and the Canada Gazette of January 9, 1943, his citation reading: "WHITE. Robert, X-61765, CPO/ERA, RCN, DSM. For bravery and devotion to duty before the enemy. Chief Engine Room Artificer White has served in His Majesty's Canadian Ships for a considerable period of time, during which he has rendered very valuable and efficient service in the engine room. Against the enemy, he has always displayed coolness, resourcefulness and courage of the highest order."
