John Edward Freer was born on 13 July 1911. He was awarded his M.I.D. whilst on Mammoth for good service as part of the Channel Mobile Balloon Barrage. The Mammouth was commissioned on 3 July 1940 and was originally a rescue tug. She became a barrage balloon vessel in August 1940 but was returned to being used as rescue tug from 1943 onwards. He was awarded his D.S.M. for service on Equerry which was a requisitioned trawler from August 1939, she was to become a Minesweeper until returned in April 1945. Freer died in 1980.
