Product Information

Indian Mutiny 1857-59 to an original defender of Lucknow to Pte. J. Lewis 32nd Light Infantry

1 clasp, Defence of Lucknow officially named to: J. Lewis, 32nd L.I.

Highlights polished, one or two minor edge knocks, about very fine.
Two men by the name of John Lewis are noted on the Medal Roll, both serving with the 32nd (Cornwall) Regiment of Foot and both with the single 'Defence of Lucknow' clasp. One is noted as being killed in action at Chinhat (30 June 1857) and the other as being invalided to South Africa as a result of wounds received on 2 August 1857.
The 32nd served with much distinction during the Indian Mutiny - not least during the famous Siege of Lucknow (July - November 1857), where four members of the regiment won the Victoria Cross and their Commanding Officer, Colonel John Inglis, was in overall command of the Residency. Upon the conclusion of the campaign, the regiment was retitled as a unit of Light Infantry in honour of their heroic actions.
