For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He went forward with the attacking troops, got his guns into action in a commanding position, and assisted materially in destroying the retreating enemy and dispersing troops that were massing for a counter attack. The aggressive manner in which he used his guns attracted hostile fire, but regardless of this he continued to fire them with great effect, and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. He showed splendid initiative and determination.
